What is a Budget?

A budget is a plan that includes all income and expenses for a person, a family, an organization, or a government. It’s really the most basic of all financial plans.

Your budget gives you a big picture of your income and necessary expenses, and lets you know how much you can afford to spend and how much you should save. Once again, it’s a basic plan

Just like large organizations that need to operate according to a budget, so too, does the ordinary person. It’s a great idea, for you to have an idea of how much you are making, how much you are spending, and most importantly, how much you are saving for the future. (there are so many people who have no idea about this)

More than ever children need to learn at an early age that they should spend less than they make, and that saving money for their future is very important. They need to learn some good financial habits as soon as they can.

In order to know how much you can afford to spend and how much you should save, you need to have a big picture of your finances. Your budget gives you that big picture and without it – you’ll find yourself in severe financial distress.

As a responsible adult, you will have many expenses that are necessary – including shelter, food, water, and electricity. Some expenses are known as discretionary (not necessary expenses), and these can include entertainment, eating out, and hobbies.

Your priorities will be different to anybody else that you know and your budget will be as individual as you are.

Don’t worry about what other people are doing – just concentrate on getting it right for you, and your family. And, if you don’t know how or where to start – get some help from a trained professional.
